What is High Blood Pressure or Hypertension?

The Condition in which blood exerts high and long term force on the wall of artery is called high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause serious health problems such as heart disease.
Blood pressure is the amount of force our heart exerts on the blood while pumping it to our arteries. We measure blood Pressure in two numbers which are systolic pressure and diastolic pressure.
Systolic pressure is the force by which our heart pumps the blood to our body. Systolic pressure is the high number in both readings.
The diastolic pressure is the resistance force which our body exerts in the opposition of blood flow. Diastolic pressure is the lower reading of blood pressure. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressures are measured in millimeters in mercury (mmHg).

Normal Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is considered to be ideal when systolic pressure is equals to 120mmHg and diastolic pressure is equals to 80mmHg. The systolic pressure is considered as normal when it lies between 90 to 120mmHg. And Diastolic pressure is considered as normal when it lies between 60 to 80mmHg.

High Blood Pressure

Our Blood pressure will be considered as high if the readings for systolic pressure are consistently higher than 140mmHg and for diastolic pressure these readings are consistently higher than 90mmHg. If your readings lie in this region you have a high blood pressure (hypertension). In this condition visit your doctor and follow his instructions to control your blood pressure.
Blood pressure in between of 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg is considered as pre high blood pressure condition. It means you are developing the high blood pressure condition. So try to control it under pre high blood pressure conditions.

Low Blood Pressure

Many people get worried when they came to know that their blood pressure is lower than the ideal. There is nothing to be worried; instead they should be happy because the risk of stroke or heart attack is decreases with low blood pressure.
Your blood pressure will be considered as low if your readings are less than 90/60mmHg. If any of both readings lie in this region the blood pressure will be considered as low blood pressure.

Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

Mostly people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms of it. Very few patients of high blood pressure have headaches. This is not a very specific symptom. If our blood pressure reaches to 180/110mmHg it will be considered as hypertensive crises. In hypertensive crises following symptoms appears:
Ø  Headache
Ø  Nausea
Ø  Breathlessness
Ø  Blurred vision
Ø  Nosebleed
Ø  Vomiting
Ø  Very fast heart beat
Ø  Dizziness

Causes of High Blood Pressure

Heart is the organ that pumps blood in our body. Lower oxygen blood goes to the lungs, where oxygen is added to it. This rich oxygen blood goes to our heart which pumps it to our whole body. This pumping process creates a pressure on our arteries. The high blood pressure is divided into two categories which are Essential high blood pressure and secondary high blood pressure.
Essential high blood pressure has no established cause. This type develops gradually in many years in adults. Secondary high blood pressure appears suddenly.
We are not exactly aware of what causes high blood pressure. For most people, there is not a single cause of high blood pressure. Our lifestyle has a great impact on the development of high blood pressure. Following factors increases the risk of high blood pressure:
Ø  Taking too much alcohol
Ø  Taking too much salt
Ø  Not taking enough fruits
Ø  Not taking enough vegetables
Ø  Overweight
Ø  Lack of physical activity
Ø  Using tobacco
Ø  Taking too much stress
The above mentioned factors are controllable by us. There are some factors which increases the risk of high blood pressure which is not in our control. These factors are as follow:
Ø  Age
Ø  Race
Ø  Family History

Treatment of High Blood Pressure

There is wide range of medicines for the treatment of high blood pressure. Different medicine controls the blood pressure in different ways therefore you can take more than one medicine at a time. Do not choose your medicine on your own. Follow your doctor’s prescription.
Treatment of high blood pressure depends upon the severity of the disease. If the blood pressure is slightly higher than the normal than few lifestyle changes are enough to treat it. If the blood pressure is moderately high then doctor will suggest a proper medicine along with lifestyle changes. If blood pressure level reaches 180/110mmHgthan doctor will refer you to a specialist.
Following are the lifestyle changes which can help you to control your blood pressure.
Ø  Exercise Regularly
Ø  Lose Extra Weight
Ø  Sleep Properly
Ø  Take Lower Salt Diet
